About us
Our philosophy
Since 1988 our popular excursions in the legendary VW Kübelwagen have been organised under the leadership of Austrian-born Gery Nutz.
The idea was born out of necessity: the most interesting parts of Bali were hard to reach, the roads were poor and not passable with just any vehicle. So we turned to the VW 181, a car widespread on the island, for tours away from the main tourist routes.
Besides the choice of this original means of transport, our focus is on in-depth information: our trained drivers and intensively coached, German- and English-speaking guides do their best to show travellers the island of Bali from a rather different perspective.
Thanks to the open sides of the cars, travellers are closer to everything that happens during the slow drives through villages and rice landscapes. Above all, you experience the country with one very important sense – your nose: you can literally smell the island. Alongside the unforgettable visual impressions, it is Bali's myriad scents that make the experience so intense.
Gery Nutz – managing director
At the age of just 19 I was drawn to faraway places – four months in Afghanistan, travelling by car. But my curiosity was far from satisfied: further journeys took me to Pakistan, India, the Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and, in Indonesia, to Java and Bali.
Friends kept asking for exotic souvenirs, and so a small trade in jewellery and textiles began. In 1984 jewellery-making brought me to Bali. What an island! The landscape, the nature, the people. I almost forgot my orders and concentrated instead on learning the foreign language and culture.
In 1988 a childhood friend asked me to help out as a tour guide. On 18 April 1988 I led the first "Classic Bali Tour" to the Batu Karu jungle temple. What was meant to be a short stand-in became a life's work.
Kompiang Wati – partner
Kompiang has been married to Gery since November 1987 and is the mother of Chandra Devi and Mahendra Michael. She is indispensable in every part of life and business – and makes sure that Bali VW Tour's guests are treated to exquisite Balinese food, for example on the "Hidden Bali" tour and on several round trips.
"Our customers become our friends." This attitude has carried us from day one. Let more than 38 years of experience convince you.
