Water plants
Ponds and water gardens belong to many of Bali's temples and courtyards – and with them some of the island's most beautiful plants.
Indian lotus – Keladi Air – nelumbo nucifera
The Indian lotus belongs to the water-lily family and is the epitome of a mystical Asian plant. Buddha sits enthroned on the lotus flower – according to one legend he was even born on it. The plant symbolises the three elements earth, water and air. Its very large leaves, floating on the water, repel both water and dirt.
Egyptian lotus – Teratai – nymphaea lotus
The Egyptian lotus also belongs to the water-lily family and blooms in white and pink in the island's ponds.
Papyrus – Siprus – cyperus papyrus
This sedge originally comes from tropical central Africa. Today it is a popular ornamental in all warm, humid countries.
