Perennials and ornamentals
The Balinese fill their gardens and courtyards with an impressive variety of colourful perennials and ornamental plants. Many of the blossoms find their way into the daily offering trays.
Frangipani – Kemboja – apocynaceae
The temple tree par excellence: its white, yellow, pink or red blossoms have an enchanting scent and adorn temples, courtyards and offerings. One of our villas is named after it.
Desert rose – Adenium – adenium obesum
A popular potted plant on Bali, often placed in house courtyards.
Angel's trumpet – datura arborea
These strongly scented, poisonous ornamentals grow in Bali's cooler mountain regions.
Heliconias – Pisang Merah – heliconia
The "lobster claws" with their bright red bracts are among the most striking blossoms of the tropics.
Hibiscus – Kembang Sepatu – hibiscus rosa-sinensis
The large hibiscus blooms belong to Bali as much as the rice terraces – it too gives its name to one of our villas.
Sandat (ylang-ylang) – Kenanga – cananga odorata
Cultivated as a shrub, otherwise a tall tree with inconspicuous, sweetly scented flowers. The blossoms are placed on offerings or worn in the hair.
Red ginger – Onje – alpinia purpurata
This plant belongs to the ginger family; its flower grows like a large spike.
Giant spider lily – Kumis Kucing – crinum amabile
In Indonesia this plant is called "cat's whiskers".
