Tour 5 – Batur volcano climb
In the darkness of night the ascent of the 1,717-metre Batur volcano begins. For reasonably fit walkers, the roughly two-hour climb poses no great difficulty – and the reward is an unforgettable sunrise over Bali's volcanic peaks.
Participants are picked up from their hotel at night in a VW "Kübelwagen" and driven straight to Kintamani. After a short briefing at the meeting point below the mountain, the roughly two-hour ascent begins. Experienced local guides lead our participants safely to the summit by torchlight. At a small hut, hot tea and sandwiches are served.
The morning sky turns spectacular colours: with a little luck, in the light of the rising sun you can see Bali's volcanic mountains, Mount Rinjani on the neighbouring island of Lombok (3,726 metres) and Lake Batur below.
In daylight the guide shows you the surrounding crater caves, then we walk across the volcanic slopes through lava ash. At one hot spot, raw eggs are cooked in minutes. The descent follows a path close to the site of the 1994 eruption. Shortly before the car park, in the midst of a lunar lava landscape, there is a refreshment stop – then return to your hotel.
